This design is replicated from several examples found in Norway, Sweden and Iceland, 9th – 10th century.
Tortoise brooches (also called turtle brooches) are worn in pairs on the front of a Viking woman’s dress/hangerock. They usually have a string of beads suspended between them, complete with charms & keys.
